Honda Hot Hatch

In News

There was a time when, if a person desired the practicality of a hatchback,  performance was out of the question. Then Honda introduced the Civic Type R.

The Honda Civic Type R has long been admired from afar by U.S. auto enthusiasts. With its aggressive styling and increased performance, the Type R was available nearly everywhere except North America. Thus we admired the vaunted red R badge with a slight degree of disdain.

Hallelujah! In 2017 the Civic type R finally made it to the shores of America. It featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that was capable of delivering 306hp (205 lb.-ft. of torque) to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox. The beast of a hatchback could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9-seconds and had an electronically controlled top speed of 170 mph. This is truly one hot hatchback!

In addition to a more powerful engine and more capable suspension, the Honda Civic Type R also has a sportier exterior appearance than the average Civic. Contributing to the high-performance aesthetic are an assortment of air manipulators, including vents, fins, and spoilers. As to whether they are all functional; I will simply say that the Type R set a new record pace (for front-wheel drive production vehicles) at Nurburgring and other tracks around Europe.

If I must choose one word to describe the interior of the Honda Civic Type R; I would say Red. The seatbelts are red, the 7-inch centrally mounted dash display is red, the steering wheel cover is red, and certain dash and door panel accents are also red. Fortunately it matches well with the red accent stripes and Type R badging on the exterior. The seats are supple enough to be comfortable but firm enough to provide support during the most challenging of driving maneuvers.

For those Honda Civic Type R owners who demand a little more from their automobiles, Honda Factory Performance (HPF) offers the Red Carbon Kit. This is an add-on kit with numerous red carbon-fiber goodies. They include side view mirror covers, a rear wing spoiler, and numerous interior pieces to complement the interior of this hot hatch. A red leather-clad shift knob (to replace the brushed aluminum knob that gets very hot if exposed to direct sunlight), illuminated (in red) center console trim, specially designed Type R door sill plates, and a Type R car cover are also included in the HFP Red Carbon Kit.

A great finishing touch for any Honda Civic Type R is a top-quality custom fit cup holder, storage compartment, and door panel pocket liner set from – in RED of course
